How Kota sizes work

Fixed sizes, stepping every six inches

Kota stone is not sold as random bed-run material. It is sawn to a set of standard sizes that step in six-inch increments — 2′ × 2′, 2.5′ × 2′, 3′ × 2′, 4′ × 2′ and so on — up to 8 feet long and 3 feet wide. Anything off that grid is cut to your drawing.

Every step up costs moreThe rate per square foot rises with the size. Large sound pieces are scarcer in the bed, slower to saw and easier to break in handling, so a 5′ × 2.5′ slab is dearer per square foot than a 2′ × 2′ one in the same stone and finish.

The working limit8 ft long and 3 ft wide is the standard maximum. Beyond that you are into special production, if the bed will give it at all.

Cut to sizeAny module to your drawing — treads, risers, sills, copings, counters. Cut-to-size carries labour a standard size does not.

Nominal, not exactA full slab is sawn to about the nominal size, not exactly to it — a 4′ × 2′ measures roughly 47–48″ by 23–24″. You are billed the nominal figure, so count on the low end when working out piece counts. Cut-to-size pieces are exact.

Thickness

Two standard bands, and what they weigh

Almost everything ships in one of two thickness bands. For the stone itself both are quoted at broadly the same rate per square foot, because Kota sells by area rather than volume. What separates them is weight — and therefore freight.

Figures are working averages for Kota limestone. Use them to estimate freight, not to settle an invoice.

Order more than you measure

Allow 5% over the measured area on a plain floor, 8–10% where there are diagonal cuts, borders or a lot of small rooms, and 10–12% on riven or random material. Stone bought later rarely matches the first lot.
